Harley Winster Competition 2005

20th December, Cambridge Parkside Pool

A large and enthusiastic audience watched a festival of diving to celebrate the end of a very successful year of competition diving. The Cambridge Dive Team performed a magnificent diving display that was followed by the Harley Winster competitions. The divers enjoy the unusual format of these competitions that allows male and female divers to compete in the same event and where dives are performed from the 1 and 3 metre springboards and the 5 metre highboard. A record number of 30 divers took part in the 3 competitions, setting new records in each event.

The novice competition was won by 10 year old Josh Sambrook, scoring an impressive total of 97.10 points from his four dives to break the record of 79.30 set by older brother, Ben, in 2003. Josh was hard pressed by Hannah Clayden in second place with 96.20 points and promising newcomer young Chloe Cook who scored 85.70 for the bronze medal. Just missing out on the medals was Josh's young sister Anna Sambrook who scored 82.80 points. Head Coach, James Etherington, was pleased that all eleven novice divers had scored over 70 points, emphasising the high standard now achieved by the novice group divers.

The under 14 event was dominated by three of Cambridge National divers. The rapidly improving 11 year old Harry Kitson showed great skill performing all his dives to a high standard to rightfully claimed the bronze medal with 168.70 points.

11 year-old Sharnia Mockford, just back from the South Africa National age group competition in which she won gold and claimed second place with 192.85 point. Sharnia performed a complex set of dives beautifully, scoring a fantastic 46.20 points for her forward two and a half somersaults from the high board. However, determined and talented Nathaniel Doza took the lead with his first dive and then achieved a personal best of 54.60 for his high tariff inward double from the highboard. He maintained his lead position throughout the competition to claim the trophy with 212.10 points, breaking the record of last year by more than 40 points. Vivian Cliff just missed out on the medals in fourth place with 156.05, followed by her young sister Lucy Cliff scoring 140.20 points.

The over 14 year event saw two of the masters' squad on the winners' podium. It was a dramatic competition with only 0.25 point between first and second place. Matthew Jaroszewicz, with a record-breaking score of 189.70 claimed the trophy, followed by Ulrike Lange with 189.45. The lead changed hands between them during all six rounds but Matthew eventually stamped his authority with a magnificent inward one and a half somersaults from the 5 metre platform. 15 year old Hannah Tucker won the bronze with an impressive 176.00. Just missing out on the medals in this event was Laura Shipsey with 164.30.
