Armada Cup 2006
17th-19th February, Central Park Pool, Plymouth
12 year old Sharnia Mockford was the star diver from Cambridge at the Armada Diving Cup Competitions, a prestigious national event held in Plymouth each year. Sharnia made it to the finals in all of the girls 12/13 year age group events. She scored 145, 143 and 134 points respectively for five dives in the 1, 3 and 5 metre board preliminary competition. In the finals Sharnia secured a fantastic 3rd place on the 1 metre scoring 98 points for three dives, and followed this up with 5th on the 3 and 5 metre boards, scoring 90 and 91 points respectively.
Six of Cambridge's top divers competed in the event. In addition to Sharnia, Nathaniel Doza and Aaron Paul represented the Club's national squad. 12 year old Nathaniel, competing in the boys 12/13 year group was ranked 6th at the end of the 1 metre prelims, climbing to a most impressive 4th place in the finals. Nathaniel put in a fine display of dives on the 3 metre board scoring a personal best of 150 points for five dives in the prelims to take 7th place but just missing out on the finals by 2 points. 13 year-old Aaron, a newcomer to the Armada cup, marked his debut by making it into the finals of the 14/15 year age group 1 metre competition. He scored a fantastic 170 points for 6 dives in the prelims, and finished sixth in the finals with a total of 76 points for three dives. Aaron was placed 10th on the 3 metre springboard event scoring a personal best of 161 points.
The development squad was represented by the Cliff sisters Adele (16 years), Vivien (13) and Lucy (8). Competing for the first time in this event and against the top divers in the country, all three showed great competition composure. Adele, competing on both 1 and 3 metre springboards achieved 90% of the targets set by her coach. Vivien produced a personal best on the 3 metre springboard with a score of 132 for six dives, for 12th place. Despite her young age, Lucy managed to meet 90% of her targets finishing 8th on 1 metre with 113 points for five dives and 10th on the 3 metre with a personal best of 112 points.
Head coach, James Etherington was very happy with the Cambridge divers' performance. It was by far the most successful Armada cup since he joined the club 3 years ago.
