ASA Elite Junior National Diving Championship
Sophie Clark and Sharnia Mockford, representing the Cambridge Dive Team, competed in the ASA Elite Junior National Diving Championship in Sheffield and amassed an impressive 5 medals.
Experienced 15 year-old Sophie competed in Group B (14/15 years) in the 1 metre and 3 metre springboard and 3 metre synchronised events winning medals in all events. A fine display in the 1 metre event earned Sophie the silver medal with 285.00 points. An even better performance in the 3 metre event gained her another silver medal with an excellent 312.00 points. Sophie joined up with Fay Radcliff from Southend for the 3 metre synchronised diving event and despite their inexperience as a diving duo both dived very well to win the bronze medal with 235.80 points.
12 year-old Sharnia, competing for the first time in the Elite championships, dived in 4 events, the 1 metre and 3 metre springboard, the highboad and 1m synchronised diving events. Her most successful competition was the 1 metre event in which she performed a very high standard of dives winning her the silver medal with an impressive 250.40 points. In the highboard event Sharnia almost made it a silver double but despite some very impressive complex dives missed the silver by just 2 points, settling for bronze with 220.70 points. Sharnia dived well in the 3 metre event to secure 5th place with 224.50 points. She then successfully teamed up with Georgia Wingrove from Southampton to compete in the 1 metre synchronised diving event scoring 144.40 for 5th place just 6 points off a medal position.
Head coach James Etherington was full of praise for both girls.
"These championships are for the very best divers in the country and for both to win medals is a credit to them and the Cambridge club."
