GDBF Summer Masters 2006

Manchester Aquatics Centre

24th & 25th June 2006

Cambridge Dive Team sent a significant team of eight divers to the National Summer Master at the Manchester Aquatics centre. The team covered all ranges, with two divers taking part in their first novice competition to one of our ex-national level divers.

First to compete were Helen Czerski  and Kyle Treiber in the womens' 25-29 three metre competition. Kyle came in fourth with 149.10 points (despite a recorders' error with her dive sheet) and Helen fifth with 145.80.

The next event saw Martino Felchero  win the mens' 16-29 novice one metre competition with a score of 123.25. Chris Smith in his first competition, followed Martino in fourth place with 105.25 points. This same event ran with the mens' 30-39 one metre competition, in which Huw Griffiths came fourth with 191.10 points.

The second half of the Saturday saw the diving move up to the tower. A bronze medal was won in the mens' 30-39 platform event by Richard Bowers  with a score of 158.70. This was a very close competition for the final medal, with Huw coming in fifth less than two points behind with 157.15. (Fourth place was taken by our erstwhile nemesis Richard Heraty from Barnet Copthall on 157.50.)

The final event of the day was the mens' and womens' platform events for the (not that much!) younger competitors. Kyle won a silver medal in the womens' 25-29 platform event with 155.90 points. Chris and Martino both competed in the novice mens' 16-29 platform event; Chris jointly won this event with Robin Coates of Ulster Diving Club on 86.30 points. Martino came third with 78.65 after a dive sheet error resulted in a brave attempt to perform an armstand half somersault (611) from the five metre platform. Finally, in the womens' 16-29 novice event newcomer Blossom Stephan came fourth with 76.40 points.

There were a few sore heads around on the Sunday morning from the customary party the previous night (none of us obviously - we're all well behaved athletes!). Sunday saw the springboard events that were not run the previous day: the mens' three metre and the womens' one metre.

First into the fray again were Kyle and Helen, who reprised their positions from the one metre competition. Kyle came fourth with 175.80 and Helen fifth with 120.35. Blossom also competed in the novice event, coming sixth out of nine with 65.45 points.

The following event was the mens' three metre. In the 30-39 competition, Richard came fourth with 183.10 and Huw fifth with 178.50. In the 16-29 novices competition, Chris won the bronze medal with 79.00 points.

The observant amongst you may have noticed that this article has only mentioned seven out of the team of eight. Sadly, Friday's training session resulted in a trip to A&E for our final team member Emily Manktelow after she clipped the board performing an inward one and a half somersaults on the three metre board. While her foot was merely a bit sore, she landed side on and perforated her ear drum. This leaves her unable to dive for a few weeks.
