CDT Harley Winster 2007
Parkside Pools, Cambridge
18 December 2007
In the final competition of 2007 the Cambridge Dive Team showed that their divers produce some of the best diving in the country. The evening saw wins for Aaron Paul, Lucy Cliff and Matthew Goodfellow in the Harley Winster Trophy events plus a thrilling display by the Dive Team.
The Harley Winster Trophy events are held in memory of a young club diver and reflects his fearless attitude to diving with competitors performing dives from the 1, 3 and 5 metre boards.
Aaron Paul defended his title in the over 14 year group, shattering his old record by over 57 points with a final score of 267.40. However he was pressed hard all the way by Matthew Roberts who was waiting to pounce into first place should Aaron falter. Aaron kept his composure and his best scoring dive, a forward two and half somersaults with a full twist carrying the highest tariff of the competition with a degree of difficulty of 3.0 scored 58.50 points to give him the title. Matthew ended just a few points behind with 260.60. Nathaniel Doza's fine diving put him in bronze medal spot. Such was the standard in this competition that all three medalists broke the previous record score.
An impressive score of 206.30 points gave 11 year old Lucy Cliff the trophy in the under 14 year group but not without a struggle from her talented competitors. There was a strong challenge from Daniel Goodfellow taking silver with 194.95, whose only hiccup was a slightly below form forward two and a half somersaults. Fast improving Sebastian Jaunzens took the bronze medal. He led the competition for the first three rounds but it was Lucy's final dive, a back two and half somersaults scoring 51.80, that helped her to victory.
In the novice contest Matthew Goodfellow took the gold medal and trophy with a winning score of 100.90 points. He impressed the judges with his back dive piked, which received 7.5s and 8s. Matthew's final score beat last year's record total by over 15 points. Dania Lindop finished in bronze position with 81.40.
The trophies and medals were presented by Harley's brother, Ellis Winster.
The diving display featured poolside movements by the younger divers plus complex dives from all the boards, synchronized dives, flights with eight divers leaving the highboard at the same time and comedy dives by the coaches. An excellent evening of diving.
