CDT L2 Championships 2009
Parkside Pools, Cambridge
29 January 2009
Cambridge Dive Team's Novice divers took to the pool to compete in the club's Level 2 Championships. The conditions this year had been raised to the same as that of the national championships. Despite that, the young divers didn't disappoint, producing some outstanding performances and nail biting competitions.
The evening's competitions started with the youngest competitors in the Girls and Boys E/D Age group. Rosy-May Trewin Marshall was in sensational form winning the gold with the highest score of the night with 248.75 points. Rosy showed some sound basic skills scoring 7s for her sitting tuck roll on the 3m springboard as well as her ability to carry over her form into the more difficult skills scoring 6s for her forward one and half somersault on the 1m springboard. Florence Simmons and Pamela Chicken had a very closely fought competition for second and third place with both girls stepping up and showing real potential for the future. Florence narrowly squeezed her way into the silver medal position after producing the best back tuck roll from the 3m springboard of the night. The judges scores of 7s took Florence from third to second on the last dive of the competition pushing Pamela into the bronze medal position. Pamela dived well and showed some good shapes but her inexperience produced a lot of nerves. This age-group is starting to look very promising for the Cambridge Dive Team.
Daniel Murphy in the Boys E/D age-group suffered both highs and lows throughout his twelve dive competition but came through to put in a final score of 219.15. Daniel's inconsistency was shown with a back dive tuck on the 1m springboard scoring 3s but then finished his competition with the pre-requisite back tuck roll on the 3m springboard scoring 6.5s. This was certainly a learning experience for this young worthy winner.
In the Girls Group C age group Jasmin Glen and Amelia Brasnett were locked in a two way battle for top spot. Amelia was clearly suffering from nerves pre-competition but blew the judges away with a magnificent forward pike fall from the 3m springboard scoring 7.5s and an 8 from the judges. Both girls dived superbly throughout the competition but it was Jasmin showing the slightly cleaner lines on her dives that narrowly pushed her into the gold medal position with 242.7. Amelia's efforts gave her a final total of 236.45 points.
Competing in the Girls B+ age group were Sarah Arthur and Emily Douillot-Redfern. In this age group the girls had to perform some of the harder dives in the Novice event but this was not a compromise on quality. Although not riddled with high scores from the judges the divers produced a very entertaining event which was duely appreciated by the spectators. Consistent scoring of 6s meant yet again another closely fought competition unveiled. Sarah took first place with a final total of 134.7 and Emily dived into the silver medal position with 129.25.
As well as competing for silverware all of the divers were diving to achieve the qualification points need to move forward to the Regional event later in the year. Four were successful and head to Bedford to represent the Cambridge Dive Team against the rest of the region's best Novice divers. Big congratulations go to Rosy-May Trewin Marshall, Jasmin Glen, Amelia Brasnett and Sarah Arthur. Good luck girls and train hard!
