Club President Sharyn Bord named winner of Harold Fern Award

Cambridge Diving Development Centre are pleased to announce that Sharyn Bord has been awarded the Harold Fern Award for her services to aquatics. This award is given annually for those individuals making an outstanding contribution at club, county, regional or national level.

Sharyn has been recognised for her dedication to diving after being nominated by the East Region for the Harold Fern Award. Speaking to Swim England she said “It was totally out of the blue so I am delighted and obviously very honoured to be considered, let alone to win it”. Members of CDDC will know just how much hard work and devotion Sharyn has to the sport through coaching and officiating, as well as aiding with administration at local and regional levels.

Trail blazing from the get-go in 1963 when diving boards were introduced to Parkside Pools, Sharyn has been an integral part of the club and diving community through both her career in aquatics and subsequent volunteering roles. Whether lobbying for increased pool time, funding or improved facilities for the club, she has been at the forefront of the dive team’s development.

Reflecting on how the club has matured to a 300-member strong community, Sharyn credits the commitment of coaches and teaching programme in supporting the development of national and European champions who once called Parkside their home pool. Many of the club’s talented divers have been identified by British Diving and are invited to attend larger performance centres.

Sharyn’s approach to her volunteering and work in diving is encapsulated as she says: “I think that’s how I see our job: we have to try and get every child that wants to dive to be the best they can and if that helps them get to the elite pathway, that’s brilliant. If they just do it for fun, that’s also brilliant.”

Many congratulations to Sharyn on being recognised by our national aquatics sporting body after her recognition in the Queen’s Honours list in 2020.

Moving up to platform Hallie made it a hat-trick of gold medals making her the overall junior female winner. The fight was on for the senior female title with the 5m to be the decider. Tobi scored really well but Sophia rose to the challenge with some amazing rip entries rewarded by the judges, giving her the gold medal and the overall senior female county title.

Finishing the evening the senior open event was another highlight with excellent diving and again featuring the same 3 divers for the medals. However, it was the turn of Charles to impress with his complex dives and precision entries to take gold, whilst achieving a new county platform record. Finn was close behind in silver and Rufus completed his competition with a final bronze. Despite Charles’ win here it was Finn who had the highest overall score to take the senior open county title.

The County President, Ian Liversedge, was there to enjoy the evening and present medals and trophies.
