Success at Regional Club Championships

Cambridge Dive Team took a team of 13 divers to Southend for the annual Regional Club Championships. The two-day event saw divers compete across several competitions in boys’, mens’, girls’ and womens’ categories, from the 1m springboard all the way to the 10m platform, in a mixture of individual and synchronised events. CDT divers brought their A-game and came away with a grand total of 12 medals! More details below …

The first day of the event saw a number of medals won for Cambridge. First up was the
junior girls 1m event, in which five Cambridge divers took part. It was a first time competing at a regional level for three of our divers; Sophia Howard placed 25th on her debut while Yuzu Baxendale and Florence Tibbatts placed 18th and 16th respectively, both also on a first-time regional stage. Daisy Maddocks-Hunt put in a good performance to secure 13th place while Tobi Fayomi was the best performing Cambridge diver taking home the bronze medal.

Second up was the boys 3m event which showcased some lovely diving from Ryan Church, placing 5th, and Charles Tibbatts who took the silver medal – a great achievement for the club’s up and coming divers.

Following on from this was the women’s 3m event where Cambridge had three divers representing the squad. Amelia Aldridge and Zia Gordon just missed out on top-ten finishes placing 14th and 12th respectively. Meanwhile, Daisy Halls was the standout diver of the weekend taking home the gold medal in this 3m event winning by an impressive margin of 10 points. The first competition for the men came in the form of the 1m event in which Cambridge had four divers taking part. Rufus Bord took 8th place with Dominic Williams placing 7th and Ben Matthams in 5th. It was Finn McFarlane, though, that took the bronze in his first event for Cambridge with an impressive performance.

The penultimate event of the day for both of the younger age-groups was the platform event. Within the girls’ event, Tobi Fayomi placed 5th, closely followed by Daisy Maddocks-Hunt in 7th, both performing some solid diving. Charles Tibbatts took his second medal
of the weekend in the boys’ event with another silver, a fantastic way to finish his busy first day.

The final event of the day was the Junior 1m synchro event in which Cambridge entered two teams. An exciting competition for all, Charles and Ryan competed in their first synchro event together placing 9th, while Tobi and Daisy placed 7th – another debut pairing. With some promising results, we hope to see these divers back again for more synchronised events.

The second day saw another big medal haul from the Cambridge team. The women’s 1m event was another highlight of the weekend for Daisy Halls – again winning the gold medal with a comfortable lead. In the same session, Amelia placed 9th with Zia in 14th. Daisy and Amelia also competed in the senior platform synchronised event, putting in some good dives across the platforms, including one from the 10m platform, to secure a 4th place finish.

The second event for the men over the weekend was the 3m springboard in which all the Cambridge divers secured top ten finishes. Dominic placed 7th while Rufus took 6th place, narrowly missing out on a top 5 spot to Ben. Finn took home his second bronze medal of the weekend – a promising addition to a growing collection. Later that day, the men competed in their platform event, in which Cambridge dominated the field and did a full sweep of the podium. Dominic placed 3rd, taking his first medal of the weekend while Finn took the silver medal. It was Rufus Bord, though, that won the event performing some impressive entries into the water to secure the gold.

The girls had their final event of the weekend on the 3m board where Yuzu and Florence placed 19th and 20th respectively, both in their first 3m events at regional level. Tobi secured a top-ten finish in 7th whilst Daisy Maddocks-Hunt had her best performance of the weekend to take 4th place. Meanwhile the boys had their 1m event with Ryan taking 5th place and Charles securing the bronze medal.

The boys then had one more chance to secure some silverware in the junior synchronised platform event. Charles and Ryan re-focused and steamed ahead of the rest of the competition to secure the win and retain the junior synchro title for CDT for the second year in a row.

The women moved onto their final event of the weekend with Zia Gordon placing 10th and team mate Amelia ahead of her in 9th place in their individual platform event. The meet concluded with the senior synchronised 1m event, in which Rufus and Finn took part placing 5th overall in a first event for the pairing.

A massive congratulations to all our Cambridge divers for flying the CDT flag, competing in some tough events and bringing home medals.
