Spectacular diving and excitement returned to Parkside Pools as Cambridge Dive Team members showing their best in The Harley Winster Trophy Gala. The competitions have a unique format with divers expected to compete from 1 and 3 metre springboards and 5 metre platform providing an exciting and fun event enjoyed by both divers and spectators.
First up was the Minis event for the club’s youngest and newest divers in their first ever diving competition. No matter, the divers showed they have the talent to be tomorrow’s champions with highlight scores from Seth Wilkinson and Digby Bord, securing 10s! However, it was Annie Powell performing a mix of 4 excellent jumps and dives to take the title with a grand 101 points.
With 18 competitors in the Novice event, it was going to be the diver who could hold it together over all 5 dives who would come out top. More 10s came out for Benjamin Hanwell and it was Yuzu Baxendale who clinched the title with her final dive from 5m scoring 10s from all judges to set a new record with 164.85 points.
Tobi Fayomi won the Junior (under 14 years) trophy with 172.25 points showcasing five excellent dives. It was a highly competitive event with only 20 points separating the field and some of the best diving of the evening as divers performed their most complex dives.
The senior (over 14 years) event was dominated by Daisy Halls who sparkled across all six dives. A high scoring inward 1.5 somersaults secured her the win with an impressive total of 223.20 points.
The final event of the evening, the Masters, was included for the first time this year to welcome the club’s ever expanding adults squad. It was also a chance for club coaches Dan Murphy and Dominic Jaunzens to show their pupils how to do it. Dan put in the highest scoring dive of the evening with 63.7 for his forward 2.5 somersaults to seal the contest with a total of 223.20 off of four dives.
Overall the Harley Winster event was an excellent evening with the divers excited to be back into competitions after such a long layoff. The club and it’s members were honoured to have The President of Swim England, Ian Mackenzie, attended and present the medals. Mackenzie commented that he was very impressed by the event and the quality of the diving.
