Cambridge dive team took a squad of 6 divers to the annual Southampton Invitational event. This meet sees a range of age group and elite divers battling for a qualification place in the National Age Group Championships 2023.
The first day hosted the Girls Group B 1m event, in which Daisy Halls represented Cambridge and put in a solid performance during the prelims to secure herself a finals spot. In the final Daisy dived superbly to take home the silver medal in a tough field of competitors. The next event for the first day was the Girls Group C 3m event in which Zia Gordon and Amelia Aldridge showcased their skills. Zia placed 14th whilst Amelia placed 9th – a solid set of dives from both. Next up was the Boys Group C 3m prelims, where Cambridge had three athletes fighting for a sport in the finals. Dominic Williams, Charlie Tibbatts and Rufus Bord produced some fantastic dives with Dominic placing 12th and Charlie just missing out on a final in 7th place. Rufus secured himself a finals spot and ultimately finished the event in 6th after a good set of dives and goals achieved.
During the second day of the competition Daisy Halls once again dived well, this time in the platform event, and secured herself a finals spot. In the final she put in a stellar display to achieve her second silver medal of the meet. Next up was the Boys Group C 1m event in which Williams, Tibbatts and Bord took part again. Charlie placed 11th with Dominic just missing out on a final by 0.10 in 7th place. Rufus again dived well to make it through to the final, where he put down three good dives and secured Cambridge’s third silver medal of the weekend. Next up was the Girls Group C 1m, where a closely contested competition saw Zia finish in 9th, missing out on a final by a few points, and Amelia in 7th – just missing a finals spot by under 1 point.
Head coach Alice Clarke had this to say – “Overall the team had a good weekend, lots of valuable experience and lessons learnt. Cambridge divers continue to showcase their hard work and stamp their authority on the diving stage”
