Cambridge Dive Team recently held their annual awards event at St Barnabas Church, Cambridge. Split across nine categories, the awards celebrated some amazing achievements of the club’s springboard and platform divers at local, county and national level from within the last 12 months.
Awards were given to reflect not only competitive achievements but also recognise determination, courage and resilience to keep pushing forwards in a physically and mentally challenging sport. The prestigious Barbara Palmer Shield, in honour of Barbara who helped set up the first diving club at Parkside in the 1960s, was awarded to young diver Rufus Bord for his competitive success at National Age Groups. Another highlight was the awarding of the Lucy Hughes Shield for the “hardest working diver” which went to Amelia Aldridge. This award was presented in memory of cheerful, hardworking and resilient Cambridge diver Lucy, who sadly lost her life to a medical condition at a young age. Alice Clarke, diving development officer at Cambridge, commented that its wonderful to remember Lucy and her example through the annual award. Daisy Halls’ achievements throughout the year were also recognised with the Diver of the Year award. The evening ended with a fun quiz compiled by coach Dan Murphy to challenge divers and parents alike.
