Southampton Invitational brings podium places

Cambridge Dive Team took a squad of five divers to Southampton for the club’s annual invitational event. The competition takes place over three days, with a range of age-group and elite diving being showcased.

The first day saw multiple Cambridge divers competing for top-spot finishes – the first of which was Dominic Williams in the Boys group B platform event. Dominic performed well in the preliminary to secure himself a spot in the final that afternoon. However, prior to this he had a further prelim event to compete in alongside team mate Ben Matthams, both showcasing their skills on the 1m springboard to secure spots in the final. Dominic and Ben went onto perform beautifully in the 1m final, claiming fourth and third respectively. However, Dominic wasn’t quite finished for the day and dived again in the 1m final, holding his ground from the prelim to earn himself a silver medal.

Ryan Church was also diving in the Boys group D on day one of the competition, performing some great dives in his 1m prelim to secure a spot in the final. Here, he worked hard to stay focused and earned him-self a bronze medal – a fantastic achievement.

To finish the day Charles Tibbatts competed in the boys group C 3m, just missing out on the finals placing 7th in a hotly contented event. Meanwhile Tobi Fayomi dived her way to a final in the Girls group C 3m event, where a hard-fought battle saw her showcase some stunning diving to earn a silver medal!

Day two saw another good day of diving from the team. First up was Charles in the Boys C 1m event where he put in some good dives, narrowly missing out again on a finals spot in 7th place.

Ryan was up next in Boys D 3m, performing some solid dives to secure a finals spot, this time going through in 3rd place. Using this as motivation and spurring them on, Ben and Dominic competed in their last preliminary event of the weekend, both diving well to gain themselves spots in the final. Tobi was also competing in the Girls C 1m event at the same time as the boys, maintaining composure to take herself through to the finals.

The final preliminary of the day was the boys C platform event in which Charles Tibbatts dived well to secure his first final of the weekend. This was gearing-up to be a busy evening of finals for the Cambridge divers!

Opening the finals for Cambridge on the Sunday was Ryan who stormed ahead of his competitors to jump two places in the final, claiming the gold medal!

The next final was the boys B 3m event in which both Dominic and Ben performed some great dives. Dominic placed 3rd overall whilst Ben pushed ahead to win the gold medal. Tobi was up next in the girls group C 1m, placing 4th overall while Charles was the last final of the day placing 6th overall.

The third and final day saw two events in which Cambridge had competitors; the Girls C platform and the Boys D platform. Both Tobi and Ryan dived well to secure themselves a third final of the weekend – an impressive achievement in its-self. Tobi placed 5th overall while Ryan placed third securing himself a third medal of the weekend.

Moving up to platform Hallie made it a hat-trick of gold medals making her the overall junior female winner. The fight was on for the senior female title with the 5m to be the decider. Tobi scored really well but Sophia rose to the challenge with some amazing rip entries rewarded by the judges, giving her the gold medal and the overall senior female county title.

Finishing the evening the senior open event was another highlight with excellent diving and again featuring the same 3 divers for the medals. However, it was the turn of Charles to impress with his complex dives and precision entries to take gold, whilst achieving a new county platform record. Finn was close behind in silver and Rufus completed his competition with a final bronze. Despite Charles’ win here it was Finn who had the highest overall score to take the senior open county title.

The County President, Ian Liversedge, was there to enjoy the evening and present medals and trophies.
